With hard data from India’s Central health authorities clearly indicating that the second wave of Covid pandemic in India is bottoming out, BJP-ruled states like Assam are in a race to begin the unlock process ahead of opposition ruled states like Delhi and Maharashtra. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi signaling to kickstart easing of lockdown in the country, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has indicated that Assam could make major announcement on June 15 to unfasten the stringent Covid curfew in place albeit with caution.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press briefing on Thursday, said that his Government would take stock of the overall improvement of Covid scenario in the state on Monday ( coming June 15) at a meet in Dispur and take a decision to unlock the current restrictions in a calibrated manner with both public health safety and convenience in mind. The Chief Minister added a rider that districts with better positivity rate and Covid management would be provided more leeway on the quantum of Covid restrictions to be lifted.
Assam CM says clarity about conducting Assam Board’s Class 10 and 12 Board Exams on July 1 :
In another major announcement for Class 10 and 12 students of Assam state board anxiously waiting for clarity on their board exams, Chief Minister Sarma said that his Government would take a final call on July 1.
“If the Covid positivity rate in Assam deeps below 2 per cent we would go-ahead with the board exams for Class 10 and 12 otherwise we will call off the exams considering the risk from the virus”, said Dr Sarma adding,” if the board exams are to be conducted it would be for a few major subjects and would be a brief one between July 15 to 20″. He also emphasized that if the state decides to hold the board exams these would be “conducted strictly adhering to Covid protocols with separate slots for boys and girls”.
India’s improving Covid situation :
Meanwhile, Covid cases in India continued to decline steadily. India on Friday registered 91,702 new Covid cases and 3,403 deaths from the lethal virus in the past 24 hours.
India’s total Covid_19 case load now stands at 29.3 million with 363,079 deaths, according to the Union health ministry.
