While Guwahati city and a few districts in Assam are expected to get relief from a stringent Covid curfew in place in the wake of steady decline in daily caseload and fatalities, there has been intense speculation on the quantum of relaxation that the State Government will announce today for these districts.
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma will brief media on the overall Covid situation and new SOP for Covid restrictions in the state, to be released later today.
Daily wage earners who depend primarily on day-time daily work for their livelihoods opine that if curfew has to be relaxed then it be eased till 6 pm so that it benefits them in real terms.
“Token curfew relaxation from 1 pm to 2 : 30 pm, 3:30 or 4 pm does not benefit anyone and hold much significance either, for improving Covid situation. If there has to be curfew relaxation let it be for the entire day till sunset so that daily wage earners can earn their daily livelihood during the day and reach back home safely before sunset by 6 pm”, said a Guwahati-based builder under whom about 15 daily wage workers work for a multi-storey building at Sarusajai area. He added, ” Simultaneously, let there be strict implementation of penalty on those not wearing mask or violating Covid protocols “.
Covid curfews in districts like Cachar and Dibrugarh are likely to continue without any relaxation in light of the fact that these districts have still not registered desired outcome on lowering daily Covid caseload, said a state health department official.
